A boater contacted the US Coast Guard at around 12:40 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, after spotting an unmanned 15-foot kayak near the village Lloyd Harbor.

The kayak was found to be carrying live bait, a fishing pole, and a backpack, officials said.

Multiple Coast Guard vessels and helicopters, along with search crews from Nassau and Suffolk counties, spent over 27 hours searching more than 460 square miles but did not locate anyone.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound command center at 866-299-8031.

The Coast Guard urged the public to clearly label their kayaks and gear so they can be identified quickly in case of an emergency.
